Discover The Human Library

March 29th, 10:00am – 1:00pm. Discover The Human Library: A Unique Event to Explore Prejudices, Diversity, and Personal Experiences

What if you could borrow a human, just like a book, and engage in a meaningful conversation about prejudice, diversity, and the personal stories that shape our lives? The Human Library is coming to Emerson Williams Elementary School, offering a transformative opportunity to challenge bias and break down societal barriers.

This event is brought to you by a collaboration of local organizations including Wethersfield Public Schools, Wethersfield Public Library, Wethersfield Early Childhood Collaborative, Wethersfield Department of Social Youth and Senior Services, Wethersfield Social Justice Coalition, and Wethersfield Historical Society. Together, we invite you to participate in an open and honest dialogue designed to foster understanding and empathy in our community.

How it works:

Simply stop by the library’s front desk to receive guidance from one of our librarians about the available Books (people) for the day. Each Book is an individual who has volunteered to share their personal experiences, struggles, and insights on topics like race, gender, disability, sexual orientation, immigration, and more. The concept is simple—choose a topic, borrow a Book, and engage in a respectful, open conversation where all questions are welcome.
The Human Library is a safe, non-judgmental environment designed to foster understanding and empathy. Participants will gain a deeper appreciation for how prejudice manifests in everyday life, and how challenging these biases can lead to more inclusive communities. All conversations are encouraged with the goal of learning from one another and confronting uncomfortable topics with honesty and respect.
